TODAY

Me and Scotty are playing Kiss My Grass today. Weathers looking good, should be a good day. We'll be on the Pioneer Pro stage at 5.15pm with Same-o dropping the dubstep goodness. Funkoars are playing at some point too. Riders will be smashed and i predict i will get burnt and end up eaten alive by the mozzies.

SOME RANDOM ONES

Its been one long bender since New Years with some wicked nights and some copius drinking. I've managed to stop smoking, but double my drink intake somehow...Anyway it started with Skream + Benga at The Hi Fi a days after New Years i thought this was gonna be completely dead. People have normally caned all their money or feel too messed up to go out so soon after NYE, BUT i was proved totally wrong. Never seen the Hi-Fi so rammed before, think there was around 900 people in there going fucking apeshit. Definitely a sick show! The rider got killed, dont know how i managed to even speak on the mic to be honest!

Then the first Wobble of the New Year. Instead of putting on internationals they've decided to focus more on locals this year and the first one definitely smashed it. Again the place was nicely packed and as is standard for Wobble everyone was having a good time, no attitude's or drama's.
Lots of sweaty ravers

Broken Tooth in attendance

Then the Wiley show a few days ago - or more to the point the lack of Wiley show! I as well as bare others had been looking fwd to this one for time and for it not to have happened was a major dissapointment. I know a lot of people have been slamming Wiley for the cancellation, but just to clear it up, he had legitimate reasons and some issues that i wont speak on prevented it happening. It had nothing to do with ticket sales as has been speculated...BUT anyway Skepta and Bless Beats really came through in the end. Even at around 4pm we were hoping the show would still happen, but when it became clear that it was not gonna be a goer we decided we had to sort something to salvage the night. Last minute calls managed to secure Laundry as a venue for the evening (big up Dan @ Laundry) and a team effort on SMS + facebook managed to spread the word that we were gonna put on something that evening. It turned out to be a fucking sick night and for me probably more fun than if the original show went ahead. Big ups to Cammo + Mexi for spinning the killer tunes beforehand. Mine and Scottys set seemed to go down well, i had a fucking ball anyway, at one point Skepta rushing on stage to pull the track up after one lyric haha

Skepta and Bless's set was real heavy. I think this situation gave the audience an opportunity to see grime how its meant to be without the polished chart type tunes. Skepta was rinsing thru his bars just spraying while Bless dropped some classics. Skepta, me, Scotty, Rhys and Murky Depths finished up the set going bar for bar with Bless dropping a few lyrics too. Then everyone went downstairs to the reggae room and tore that mic up too over the dancehall riddims. According to Haley over at http://mayorettes.com/blog/ i ended the night falling into the road singing 'you can do it'?!?! I also apparently called Scotty at around 4am asking him to 'save me' from a souvlaki spot 'cos i was lost haha

anyway, massive night, big ups everyone involved

GGGREEEEEAAAZE!

Big up butterz.co.uk / grimetapes.com for coming thru again. Following on from the Wiley and D Double best ofs, this time they're coming with a selection of one of the hypest crews there has been. Dont miss out on this - Slew Dem Vol.1
link - http://sharebee.com/f3c86d01

Taken from butterz.co.uk:
This is the first compilation Grimetapes have made showcasing a crew. When Grime came off a lot of pirate stations they simultaneously killed the crew. Grime hasn't quite recovered from this yet, the only real active crew lately has been the OG's.

This compilation focuses mainly on Chronik, G Man, Tempa T, Rage and Esco. Here is the classic feature on them from Risky Roadz. With this, I just simply have to let the music do the talking.

Expect greasy bars and greasy beats.

Slewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Dem

HYPE HYPE HYPE

I swear people are getting caught up in a whole load of hype with this Obama thing. Surely wait and see what he does before lauding him as the worlds saviour!
Check this link for some interesting reading (which i dont necessarily follow, but its interesting nonethless) - http://www.davidicke.com/content/view/18281

THE BIGGIE MOVIE...

Was surprisingly good! Guaranteed loads of people will get all anal about it, but i thought it was really entertaining and the lead actor was real good as BIG.

Goodz with Nocturnal on Logan

JADAKISS - LETTER TO BIG

PLEASE...

Can someone start a regular grime night in Melbourne, i'll help lol. I always said i wouldnt get involved in promoting again 'cos its a nightmare, but i might make an exception. Apart from hearing a couple tunes here and there (shouts to Cammo - the only one i know with a healthy selection of tunes that go above the obvious ones) at certain nights, there is no grime in Melbourne. I like my dubstep you know this, but maybe an hour of grime at the nights aint too much to ask? I'm beginning to get bored of non-vocal tracks

NOTORIOUS

I got the movie this morning, but didnt have time to watch it all grrr! Contemplated a sickie, but thought better of it in the end. Gonna watch it in the park tonight if the weather keeps up, will report back...but the 20 mins or so i watched looked good!

NEXT WEEK

Just got off the blower with the promoter for the Wiley tour and he'll be live on Triple J with Skepta on Monday between 4 - 4.30pm if you're around a radio. He landed in Oz today after playing with The Ting Tings in Singapore a couple days ago. By all accounts Wiley + Skepta smashed it up over there and had the Singaporeans going off. Dont forget to grab your tickets for the show next Thursday 22nd at The Prince, kicks off at 8.30.

SCATTERED!!!

Surprisingly i've managed to keep to my new health regime, gym morning and night etc, but proper fell off the wagon last night. Went out for a couple quick one's at Workshop that somehow turned into an all nighter which found me walking Swanston St at 6.30am this morning. Managed 20 minutes sleep before getting into work and i am truly all over the place right now...i did manage to watch 'King of New York' at some point though for the first time in ages, a little cheesy, but a fucking sick film! Christoper Walken is a don in this one and Laurence Fishburne sports some crazy garms people would kill for nowadays!

WHY DID I NOT NOTICE BEFORE!!!

Walking down Fitzroy st last night i see a fucking Cold Rock has opened! When did this happen and why did i not notice?! I'm round those parts a lot and never noticed it and to make matters worse i left my wallet at home and only had a couple bucks left after dinner so had to make do with a Golden Gaytime - IT AINT WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE MY ENGLISH FRIENDS, BAIT NAME BUT BOOM ICE CREAM!

Anyway, Cold Rock tonight dun know!

KANYE VUITTON

He's gone and done a shoe with Louis Vuitton which looks like some sort of boat shoe my old man used to wear...super swag!

WILEY DEAD?

So its madness now! Wiley smashed it to start with, Goodz came back average, Wiley came back again, but now Goodz has surely ended Wiley with this one. Seems like people are still saying Wiley took it, but no way after listening to this, no way in my opinion. Dunno if Wiley will come back again (knowing him, probably!), but he's gonna need to come with something massive after this. People were saying Goodz was gonna have to get Titch on this one from jail, but i didnt think it would actually happen. Having Titch rep on this one just denies all the Titch talk from Wiley's previous dubs, and them crossdresser lines hahaha, if its out there for real then the video's gotta appear online soon!

A NEW DAWN!

I'm 12 days late into my new years resolution to get healthy-ish. The weekend saw a silly amount of beer, vodka and shots, along with a 15 fried dumplings, a souvlaki, 2 double quarter pounders, a double cheeseburger, a big mac, a regular quarter pounder, 20 nuggets, fries a plenty and 2 ice cream sundae's. There's something satisfying about strolling the couple hundred yeards or so to McD's on a hungover weekend morning and stuffing myself while reading the paper...

BUT today is the start of a new me (i swear!). I've not smoked all day (i even cut up my last half packet this morning), drunk loads of water, ate 2 bananas (anyone that knows me knows i dont go out of my way to find fruit) and i'm even going to the gym after work - the fact that its located in my building and i've only been in it once in over 2 years is pretty bad! I even woke up and had a swim before work. I did however eat 4 pieces of cake just now in celebration of someone's birthday, but if i'm being real about things i know theres no way of me changing my love of bad food, so i just have to counteract it with no smoking and using the gym. There's also the fact that i should really put some weight on, although this seems to be next to impossible for me no matter how much and how often i eat!

FEEL LIKE I'M 10 AGAIN

When i look at these shoes! Just seen Provider got Air Pegasus 89 re-issues! Damn, i remember getting these when i was a kid, they were the first 'airs' i had and i remember being fascinated by them, bouncing up and down constantly saying dumb things like 'yeah you can really feel the air in them, its like a bouncy castle'! So tempted to run down there and grab them now, but i know i'm gonna see a million little yutes sporting them all summer, i just cant do it...tho i might change my mind over the weekend depending on my alcohol expenditure.

BBBBRRING ME BBBBRRING ME!!!

Hahaha, not sure how the girls are gonna be feeling this one! Newham Gens have been threatening their album for years now i swear, but looks like it'll be out very soon. Here's a little preview...

Newham Generals - Bell dem slags

PIZZA-CHECK, BEER-CHECK, BEANBAG-CHECK

So I actually stayed in on Friday night, madness I know, but I decided I fancied having a Saturday morning hangover free for the first time in about a year. I don’t generally watch TV so I got my download on and grabbed a few movies for the evening.

First up was ‘Cass’, a film based on the life of notorious football hooligan Cass Pennant, one of the leaders of the well documented 80’s West-Ham crew the ICF (Inter-City Firm). Pennant has built up a reputation over the years as a bit of a celebrity hooligan after penning a few books about his times in the firm so I was quite looking forward to it. There’s been a number of hooligan films in recent years from the ok (‘Football Factory’) to the absolutely awful (‘Green Street’), but none of them have matched up to ‘I.D’ which I think was the absolute daddy of them all and always seems to be overlooked (I left my copy on England and cant find one over here, gutted). The fight scenes in ‘Cass’ were spot on I thought as was the depiction of the 80’s hooligan fashion – love the bit where he asks for a Lacoste tracksuit in prison haha.
Being a part of that whole scene in the 80’s where racism was rife it’s kinda mad how a black man managed to be such an integral part of the firm and I liked that it didn’t try and pull the sentimental card too much with the scenes with his family. He was adopted and brought up by a white family with no idea of his heritage and the scenes with his fam were kinda sad, but in a good way. The soundtrack captured the period real well, lots of Desmond Dekker and the like, overall a pretty wicked film I’d say.

Then it was on to ‘Adulthood’, the follow up to ‘Kidulthood’. Now I thought ‘Kidulthood’ was pretty awful to be honest, really tried too hard so I wasn’t expecting much out of this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. They still had the blatent product placement throughout (Puma this time instead of Boxfresh), and a couple of the actors were pretty bait, but definitely an improvement on ‘Kidulthood’.
For those who have seen the first one, this one carried on 6 years later when Sam gets released from prison for the murder of Trife. The basic plot is that he’s had a bit of hard time in jail and comes out a changed man. He gets moved to by one of Trife’s relatives in an early scene and spends the rest of the film hunting out Trife’s friends in an attempt to find out who if any are gonna be seeking retribution for the murder. The film looks at a few of the characters from the first film and what they’re up to now 6 years on as well as bringing in a couple of new characters. Danny Dyer makes an appearance and does his usual ‘geezer’ role, Plan B has quite a major part too and aint as bad as I thought he would be actually. The film does feel at times a little bit moralistic and I suppose with the climate of crime in London at the moment the director Noel Clarke would have felt a little bit of pressure in this regard. Soundtrack again is much better than ‘Kidulthood’. Pretty entertaining film I reckon.

Lastly I watched a documentary from 2004 called ‘Searching for the wrong eyed Jesus’. I wanted to go watch this at Fed Square on Friday but ended up downloading it instead so I could just cotch on the sofa instead . I’m a documentary person and so out of the three films this was the one I was looking forward to most, but also the most disappointing. The film follows musician Jim White on a road trip through the deep South of the states looking at the poverty, craziness and fundamental religion of the south all set to a backdrop of the local music. It had so much potential but apart from a few scenes I found it soo boring. It just tried too hard and instead of being the raw sort of film I was expecting they ended uptrying to make it too glossy and staging too much. For example they’re on a boat drifting through the swamps and all of a sudden come across a house on stilts with a couple playing guitar and singing in what is clearly a pre-prepared scene. Another time someone’s being interviewed in a barbers and then this dude starts performing a tune with everyone watching on looking at him, half laughing and smiling to themselves like ‘blud, what the hell are you doing!’ I ended up deading it with 20 minutes to go and went to bed. Glad I never paid to go see it!

THE RAP UP

Without doubt the best show on TV ever (along with Shameless), if you aint caught The Wire before then what you doing! Anyway, Mad Skills continues his novelty career with a 5 minute rap up of all 5 seasons. Shouts to XYZ Dan for the linkup.

BEER OR WINE OR SPIRITS

IMA GOOGLE YOU BITCH!!!!!!!

***Youtube killjoys have taken down the video***

This had made me crack up all day! The geezer who caught this on tape needs a knighthood. Basically some girl gets caught on New Years Eve in London pissing on the street...in front of traffic...on a busy road...THRU HER CLOTHES!!! Oh my gosh, this is too much, and now some brer has started a facebook group to find her hahaha. Its a bit bad baiting her up like that, but still, you just cant help but piss yourself - pun intended. This girl is gonna get ripped for eternity!

facebook group - http://www.facebook.com/inbox/?ref=mb#/group.php?gid=42385829349&ref=mf

***STOP PRESS***THIS IS SOME TUNE SOMEONE MADE AND YOU CAN CATCH THE 'ACT' IN QUESTION AT THE BEGINNING***

YOU OWE LOGANS MUM A MORTGAGE

'your mum's got athlete's foot on her neck' ahhahahaha

Goodz return to Wileys track last week. Getting interesting...to be honest it aint as good as Goodz is capable of, but its still fucking heavy. Should have maybe kept it a little shorter tho i reckon. It is hard i suppose to come with new disses to Wiley when he's clashed so many people. He's always gonna get the standard coke head and peadophile disses...anyway make your own mind up.

and if you missed Wileys dub last week

CUSHION FACE

I stopped blazing properly a little while back and after 10+ years of not dreaming i've finally started again. But last night i dozed off after stuffing my face with cheese (my mum always warned me cheese before bed gives you nightmares) and had my first nightmare since i was a kid! Was fucking strange as well. I had sofa cushions tied to my face with string and my mum and sister had set up trip wires all around my flat which i could see but just kept tripping over again and again and landing on my cushion face. Eventually i got to the door to get out but it was locked and thats when i woke up. Funny thing was i did actually have a cushion on my face too for some reason which i threw against the wall haha.

The pic above has nothing whatsoever to do with dreams or nightmares but came up in a google search for them for some reason and i thought it was definitely worthy of posting regardless of the topic!

GHETTO TO GHETTS

So its official, Ghetto has changed his name to Ghetts in line with his attempt on the mainstream. He'll always be Ghetto really, but i suppose it'll make it easier getting him played on radio and all that. He's just signed some deal and whats dissapointing tho is that the first release is a remix of 'Sing for me' and not the original. Its not i dont like the remix - i do, its heavy! Saw the video for it this morning, but forgot to post it up, doh! - its just a bit of a cop out cos he hardly spits on it. It follows the rolex formula of a couple catchy lines and thats it. Seems a shame when the original is such a big tune. Oh well, at least he does this electro thing better than most - cough, Flowdan, cough - and it is a smasher, just hope it does what he's hoping for.

ITS ON!

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

And the standard, stop smoking, use the gym and stay in more nights than i go out...we'll see

HALF ARSED ROUNDUP

A) This is not a 2008 list, i couldnt be bothered, b) its late even if it was. This is just a couple bits of pieces of note that i thought i'd stick up...

My biggest tunes....

Wiley - Where's my brother

As usual Wiley kept the forums active all year whether it be from his ramblings on RWD to arguments about him 'selling out' to who 'Where's my brother' is about. Regardless of the mainstream fodder he sticks out there (you were skanking to 'Rolex' dont lie!) you know he can come through with the goods still. Definitely one of his best tracks to date.

Wretch 32 feat Badness + Ghetto - Inna de ghetto

I dont often get excited about tunes like i used to when i was younger, but this was one of them exceptions. I've always rated Wretch lyrically, but never felt like he really chose heavy beats. This however is one of them spine tinglers and definitely my favourite tune of the year. The beats ridiculous, Wretch and Ghetz both smash it, Badness sounds big on the hook...fire!

Cotti feat Doctor - Calm Down

Managing to appeal to both the grime and dubstep crowds Cotti really came thru with a winner with this one. Perfect summer tune and bringing in Doctor for it was a big move.

Gig of the year

Without a doubt my favourite show of 2008 was N-Type at Wobble back in May. I was lucky enough to be on mic duties for the set too, but even if i'd just been in the crowd i'd say the same thing. I've not had so much fun at a show for aaages! He played pure bangers right the way through, his selection really was too much. I had a ball, especially when he started dropping them classic junglist joints. I was skanking like a loon! He's back on Ozzie soil this month, but at this stage no plans for a Melbourne show!?! Someone sort it out.

Watch out in '09

Griminal

Big fan of Griminal, he has that something special i reckon. One of the few youngers on a level with the more experienced heads. Lets hope he can translate it into actual tracks 'cos he burns up every set i hear him on, consistently coming out on top. I've not been a huuuge fan of a lot of his recorded output so far, but if he hooks up with the right producers then things could be big!

Fallacy

Fallacy has always been in my top 3 for as long as i can remember. First thing i think i remember hearing him on was some old Blak Twang shit or maybe some radio freestyle and he always impressed me. Head and shoulders above most from the UK Fat Danny has that charisma so many are lacking and think they can replace with overcomplicated rhymes. His album was ahead of its time and i'm sure if it came out a few years later he would have had a much better reaction. There aint many old albums i still bump, but this is one of them for sure. People have been talking about him dropping a new thing for a while now, lets hope its in '09. I'd love to see him back with Skeme and Big P, but from what i can gather that probably wont happen.

Skinnyman

'09 should see Skinnyman's follow up to 'Council estate of mind' with 'Council estate of grime'. '...'estate of mind' is probably my favourite hip hop album to come out of England, but from what i've heard so far this new one is gonna be on a totally different flex. People are gonna cane him when it gets released i reckon - especially the student hip hop brigade - but he had to do switch it up really. He couldnt come out with something similar to the first one now, that was some definitive shit and anything on a similar vibe would just be a poor version of the original. Anyway, Skinny's proved himself already and can get away with whatever he pleases in my view.

And from this side of the world look out for new Nine High obviously, M-Phazes and Autism in particular.

and on a side note both Lauren Mason and that mockney Lilly Allen need to leave the music alone and get back on the checkout, theres a que at Till 10!
