MORE YAYO THAN YOU CAN SHAKE A STICK AT

If you saw the first Cocaine Cowboys you'd be interested to know number 2 comes out in a couple days. The first one was heavy, tho i just finished watching this new one just now (there's loads of downloads floating about) and it has its moments, but has a hell of a lot of cheesy shit too. Still worth a Sunday nights viewing though, gotta be better than the crap on TV tonight!

WOBBLE STUFF

Wobble was a lot of fun on Saturday and no toilet malfunctions this month! The set up had changed around though with the booth on the other side of the room which was a bit weird 'cos it meant we were more or less in a kitchen! But anyway, here's some photo's i found with someone's name written all over them, and a couple others from my friend Belle.

A COUPLE THINGS TO DO NEXT WEEKEND

I'll be at both, so should you.
Gonna pop down the Espy to support the Choose Mics boys and drop the tune we done together off their recent album (which you can download for free at http://www.myspace.com/choosemics) and then down to workshop for Mexi's new night celebrating my homeland. Looking forward to seeing Cammo's set and drinking myself under the table.

PARCELS OF JOY

Sometimes only a pork dumpling will do and its high time this place got one of those Michelin stars or something. This has been a regular spot for a couple years now, but it started to fall off when the new owners took over some months back. Good news tho, they must have recruited the old chef again or just pulled their fingers out 'cos the dumplings really are next level now! In fact, better than they ever were. Sunday was a monstrous feast and for the first time in memory we broke the $100 mark! We've been there with about ten of us before and still come in under the ton! So you know that with only 5 of us hitting the century we really took it there. (just forget the salt and pepper calimari tho, its just one big salt rock chiselled to look like calimari).

ANOTHER NEW ROOTS VIDEO

AN INTERESTING CIGGY BREAK

Right so i've just been freaked the fuck out! I was outside work having a cigarette just now and some elderly Sikh guy walks past intently staring at me, gets a few metres past and walks back towards me and puts his finger on my forehead. My eye's went straight to his other hand instinctively looking for a shank lol, but he just goes 'you a very lucky man, three lines in your forehead'. I was frowning at the time. He takes out a pen and a scrap piece of paper and writes something on it, screws it up and puts it in the palm of my hand and closes it. He then starts telling me how i have had an immense bad luck for the last two years (very true) and that i am a loyal good person who been fucked over my some people recently (true) and that i have money problems at the moment (definitely true haha) but due to not having the opportunity to save. I'm shaking slightly at all this and then he tells me i will live a long and healthy life until i'm 95 and that August 25th will be the beginning of my good luck (which incidently is the day after my birthday and my first full day back in England). He then writes down a figure of $50,000 on another piece of scrap paper and says this is an important figure for me. Then he asks me to pick a number between 1-10, i pick 3, and he askes me to open the piece of paper in my hand which has a 3 written on it. He asks me to blow on the paper and put it in his wallet on top of a picture of what looks like some Iconic Sikh person, he shakes my hand, gives me a small black stone, turns and walks off...he said some other stuff which i wont divulge but was 120% accurate and sent a chill up my spine...i'm a pretty cynical person generally, but this was just too strange! I googled 'sikh fortune scam' and did see some stuff, but in every story money was exchanged at some point which didnt happen here, he just walked off. I kind of expected him to ask me for some money as well. I'm not one to dwell on this too much, but 50 G's for my birthday would be sweet tho.

GOD BLESS ASIAN SUPERMARKETS

These are next-level! Thanks to Belle for stocking my cupboard up before she left.

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

I'm landing back in London on August 23rd for a little piece, and i was just checking out whats gonna be happening while i'm away and then i see this! THE NIGHT BEFORE!!! I'm actually close to tears. I was listening to an old Pay As You Go set last night thinking how mad it would be if they re-united. I'm in shock, this has ruined my day!

HO'S, HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE

Just came across this which is some funny shit. Think something like this would have kept my interest during geography at school more so than rock formations and global warming...check out this map and analysis of Luda's 'Area Codes' Tune from some Yankee Geography student...

“I’m a female and a feminist. I dislike the usage of the word ‘ho’. However, as a geography major, I find this song hilarious, and had to map it,” says Stefanie Gray, referring to ‘Area Codes’ by the rap artist Ludacris.

Rap, for those less familiar with the term, is a genre in which the rhythmic delivery of rhyme and wordplay constitutes the main element of the music. Rap relates to singing as racewalking relates to running – but that’s just my inexpert opinion.

Rap music has been criticised for its content, which often consists of crude and ludicrous bragging about the rapper’s lyrical, financial, criminal, physical and sexual prowess. ‘Area Codes’ could be considered as an example of this phenomenon, sometimes referred to as gangsta rap:

“I’ll jump off the G4, we can meet outside/So control your hormones and keep your drawers on/’Til I close the door and I’m jumping your bones/3-1-2’s, 3-1-3’s (oh), 2-1-5’s, 8-0-three’s (oh)/Read your horoscope and eat some horderves (sic)/Ten on pump one, these hoes is self serve/7-5-7, 4-1-0’s, my cell phone just overloads.”

“In this song, Ludacris brags about the area codes where he knows women, whom he refers to as ‘hoes’,” says Ms Gray, who plotted out all the area codes mentioned in this song on a map of the United States. She arrived at some interesting conclusions as to the locations of this rapper’s preferred female companionship:

“Ludacris heavily favors the East Coast to the West, save for Seattle, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Las Vegas.”
“Ludacris travels frequently along the Boswash corridor.”
“There is a ‘ho belt‘ phenomenon nearly synonymous with the ‘Bible Belt’.”
“Ludacris has hoes in the entire state of Maryland.”
“Ludacris has a disproportionate ho-zone in rural Nebraska. He might favor white women as much as he does black women, or perhaps, girls who farm.”
“Ludacris’s ideal ‘ho-highway’ would be I-95.”
“Ludacris has hoes in the Midway and Wake Islands. Only scientists are allowed to inhabit the Midway Islands, and only military personnel may inhabit the Wake Islands. Draw your own conclusion.”

Ludacris is not deterred by clever and/or strong women? The concept of Ludacris’ song reminds me a bit of ‘I’ve Been Everywhere’ by Johnny Cash, which, come to think of it, probably shares some subtext with ‘Area Codes’.

WOBBLE - SATURDAY NIGHT

Just a reminder about Wobble this Saturday. Thhis night is going from strength to strength each month with regularly packed out crowds, couldnt move in there last month! Always have a wicked one, probably my favourite night out in Melbourne at the moment. So if you're looking for something to do after the DMC's finish up you cant go wrong with Wobble. I'll be snatching as many free drinks at the DMC's as i can then heading over, think me and Scotty are on around mid-night over AC23's set.

Yesterday nine members of DPM crew were found guilty of criminal damage as well as a 'Conspiracy' charge! WTF!

RETURN OF THE RIDDIM KILLA AND THE COUNTRYMAN

"They never knew about us English kids..."

Apparently Rodney P and Skitz will be back over here @ First Floor on August 22nd. Shoulda picked a different venue tho i reckon. I saw them when i was first backpacking here in '02 at the Prince which was a heavy show, would have been much better having them there again. They're always pretty entertaining, tho i did get to a stage of feeling if i heard 'Twilight of the Gods' once more time i'd have to Columbine the place. To be fair tho it did seem like they were playing bare shows every week back in England and i seemed to end up at most of them...it'll be a live show i'm sure. Think i'll have to give it a miss tho which i'm pissed at, will be at DMC's in QLD the night before, fly back the afternoon of this show, unpack, re-pack and then fly to London at 2am just as First Floor starts feeling its sleazy self!

EYE OF THE TIGER

I started boxing last night and today my arms feel like jelly! My first fight will be at Caesar's Palace in Vegas early next year...above is a pic from my training last night.

DEVLIN - THE ART OF ROLLING

I should have put something up about this already, but for some reason i didnt. Devlin is one of the sickest out there, spits so many rewindable lines. For anyone who criticises grime for having no substance, you need to check out Devz. Looking fwd to his album, but in the meantime he's just released an Ep, 'The Art of Rolling'. Grab it at all the usual spots...

RUDEBOYS ARE YOU REEEEAAAADY!

10 years ago today the legend of the D+B scene Stevie Hyper D passed away. He was on top of his game when he died and was/is a Jungle icon. There aint a name in the scene that demands as much respect. He pretty much set a template for all mc's that followed and is a standard inclusion on most D+B MC's list of top influences. Just imagine what a Hyper D, Shabba, Skibba + Debt set in 2008 would sound like!

CAMMO

Q) So what been happening in Cammo's world?

spending too much money on my bimma, skateboarding, bit of graf and laying lo in winter.

Q) You've been a big part of the burgeoning Melbourne dubstep scene, how's that been?

been good, plugging since 05 and since then weve had shit loads of international guest, local heads getting released on wax. n two new labels in sydney. scene is young but pushing hard, bout to blow any minute now

Q) You're also one of the very very few playing grime over here as well. Grime hasnt really caught on like the dubstep has, why do you think this is?

guess its a hip hop thing which took a while to blow up in oz, grime is too aggressive for this laid back town it will take a while to catch on. dubstep is safe n grabs you by its bass frequencies. grime has the bass and the lyrics. and its confrontation to most. i love it. and im getting heads into it

Q) What are your favourite things about Melbourne?

its diverse culture, weed and music

Q) So where can people catch you playing?

sydney void gig 4th july for a oz dubstep show case at phoenix, fridays at croft, sundays at the laundry and a new monthly uk hip hop/gime night with mexi at worshop starting 2nd august i think and any other gigs i can scram around town

Q) Finally, any shouts?

7EM, FLIES n yeah not fraksha (jokes)

Clay Davis

HAHA, OH DEAR...
