Mx feature...

For anyone not in the metropolitan area, here's a scan of the Mx feature from a couple weeks ago. This would be the equivalent of the Metro publication you get on the underground in London.
Many thanks to Mx for a) getting the date of the show wrong, and b) getting the album title wrong!? Nice one! Photo looks alright tho : )

HEEEEEEELP!!!

We've just put out our new single, 'Cookout (M-Phazes rmx)', which has gone to radio earlier in the week. We've had our first Triple J spin a couple nights ago, but now gotta push it to get on regular rotation.

If you are able to, we would appreciate it a hell of a lot if you would be able to take a minute to request the song in one of the ways below...it takes no time at all and you can do it on-line costing you nothing! Of course, if you wanna do it every day for the next week or so i would be even more thankful : )

there was a such a good vibe at Miss Libs on Friday night, it seemed like everyone was on our side out to support us, so massive massive thanks to everyone who came down and made it what it was, the response was overwhelming! Talking about it with the others, its definitely our favourite show we've ever done. No attitudes, good vibes, lots of girls, last track stage invasion (hope you liked that new M-Phazes banger, had to draw for the reload!), donuts and lots of Agwa. Thanks to everyone who bought a t-shirt or album and huge thanks to all involved with the show: Baddums, Afficks, A13, Murky Depths, Diem, Mexi, Nathan, Wansicks...check some photo's below courtesy of Rosco, Crystal + Carley

ANOTHER REVIEW FOR YA!!!

You can see the Nine High lads doing there thing on RRR via YouTube here, but being over Perth, i’d not had the pleasure of hearing/seeing Nine High outside of YouTube and RRR. Sure everyones saying this Album is going to be huge, but aren’t they all saying that about their albums? Well the truth be told, Nine High’s debut album is great. It doesn’t try to be anything it’s not, the simple album artwork tells you that straight away, it’s white and pure like the hip hop running through the veins of Fraksha, Scotty Hinds & Felony.

So the story goes Nine High have been doing there thing for many years now and finally after much pressure, they created an album. Then it sat ready for quite some time, while they waited to all be in the same place at the same time to release it. Apparently during this time everyones favourite, M-Phazes (good gracious!) managed to take some of the tracks from the album, turn them on their head and shake it upside down, other noteable producer to the album are Ghost Town, Jase, Drif & Lewis One. Whatever happened over all those years, it was worth it just so this album could be born in it’s current incarnation.

Theres some hot tunes on here and i’m topping my favourites at 3 tunes to keep things under control. The first stand out track from Nine High’s debut album is without a doubt Fugs Need Hugs, to open with that such a big tunes was risky, but it fit so perfectly, so simple, yet so good. Following up with Track 2, Jokers is definitely a favourite, sampling Chris Rock and touching on the most cliche of hip hop topics “fake people”, now while it’s cliche these guys pulled it off without the usual cockiness that comes with such a track. That leaves us with #3 and as easy as it’d be to just go in for Track 3 What You In It For? (another top track with a cliched topic choice), i’m going with Track 7 Bait. Once again the simple beat wins, the lyrics here are awesome though, basically it describes that person we all know and their words describe it best, “everybody does illegal things you make it obvious”. Finally if I was touching out to a #4 i’d go for What Bothers Me, this track deserves a mention for its lyrical content.

Head over to iTunes and grab Nine High now, or head over to MySpace, get aquainted with some tracks off the album and go order it from your favourite independant.

PLANET URBAN REVIEW

Another good review, still waiting on the inevitable bad one from somebody : )

Okay now I have to admit I’m not big on UK Hip Hop. I respect it and its artists for doing their thing and such, but let’s just say you normally would not find any UK Hip Hop on my iPod – period. Yet I’ve recently reconsidered my stance on this upon hearing Nine High’s eponymous debut album. I feel like The Scrooge getting visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past...telling me my music collection will not be complete without this.

Comprised of Brit trio Scotty Hinds, Felony and Fraksha, the group hold the honest approach to Hip Hop, by speaking their minds, telling a story, getting your ass moving or getting your head vibing by any means necessary.

A perfect example of this is Cookout. Weaved together with low xylophone keys, this is about (yep, you guessed) cookouts, barbecues, shindigs and the like. Even if you’re a hardcore vegan, you’ll still appreciate the selection of such a cross-cultural yet rarely touched-on topic to which all can relate. The only way to define this joint is pure, unadulterated FUN!

Driff Banger contains a speedy, loud, heavy beat (produced by Driff), and it is only right that these boys rap fast over it. However, the beat itself does quickly become a chore to listen to; perhaps what saves this track is how well the first verse is executed with Bone Thug-like flow. Unfortunately, though the battle lyrics of all three emcees here are above par for hard, the second and third verses just don’t keep up with the first flow-wise, bringing an inconsistency to it which makes it skippable after the first verse.

Now, when you find sequels to artists’ songs it is usually inter-album – Nine High have broken this tradition by including Life in parts 1, 2 and 3 spread out through the album, and the real shocker is the hat-trick really works, as each one is a total win! Life Pt.3 is a personal favourite of mine, chiming in with Oriental strings sent from the Far East that carry the beat. Content-wise, this contrasts Parts 1 and 2, as it is a generally darker and a tad more melodramatic retrospective outlook on life, which only accentuates how versatile these dudes are. Also peep out the piano-laden Alone Time if you vibe with this.

Some will relate to Nine High more than others but by no means is that supposed to stop anybody from enjoying it; after all, we don’t all relate to crack, cash, cribs and Cadillacs either. Though their flow can at times seem to not lock in as tightly as you would want, if you can objectively appreciate flat-out honest lyricism, you sir and or miss, are most certainly a fan of Hip Hop and should therefore go out and cop this album.
